I’ve generally had a minor beef with many of the Photoshop volumes that I’ve read. And when I say “read” I’m lying, because I end up not reading them, but sort of stumbling around, looking for interesting, relevant or fun stuff. So, the beef, of course, is not that the content of the book is inadequate–although that’s occasionally the case–but rather that the medium itself doesn’t really lend itself to the mission.
Enter the video-serving websites that teach stuff via, well, video. I’ve found this model of learning to be way more effective, but that’s based on anecdotal info; I don’t have empirical data to suggest that it actually IS more effective. Except that all of the sudden, everybody’s doing it. It’s like the Macarena, but less weird.
Among the many sites that do it well is the Radiant Vista, a site that does it better than the rest. If you want to learn Photoshop (for photography, that is), then you should fire up your browser, put on the coffee, and go there. You’ll find an impressive library of video tutorials that drill down not just into the tools, but into the reasons for using them, and the application.
It’s tempting to go on and on about the quality of the material on this website, but I won’t. Instead, I’ll simply suggest that you drop by and have a look. If you are interested in improving your photography by mastering Photoshop, then you will find this resource to be exceptional. Now for the punchline: It’s free. Sure, you could buy stuff from them, but I think that most of the material is on-the-house. Who doesn’t like that?
